About Hines Law LLC

Hines Law LLC aspires to be an innovative maritime, trade and commercial law practice. The practice of law used to entail a major investment in physical space and personnel. Most firms still operate that way. But technology has changed everything. The resources that law firms once kept in law libraries are now easily available on line. Most courts have adopted electronic filing, which does away with much of the need for copying and mailing out court documents. Old-fashioned dictation has long since given way to the use of laptops and hand-held devices. Message slips have been replaced by voicemail, cell phones and text messaging. But the savings from these technological innovations have, by and large, not been passed on to clients. At Hines Law LLC, the objective is to provide the same high level of service, but at a reduced cost through the use of new cloud-based technologies.

About Julius "Sam" Hines

I've been practicing law since 1992. I went to law school at the University of Virginia, where I served on the Virginia Law Review. After law school, I worked for Buist Moore Smythe & McGee, one of Charleston, South Carolina's great law firms. I did litigation, working mostly on maritime and commercial law matters. I tried cases and handled my own appeals to the South Carolina appellate courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Virginia. After my original firm merged with what is now Womble Bond Dickenson, I moved to the international firm of K&L Gates, LLP, where I practiced for six years. In 2019, I decided to form my own solo practice, which is what I do now, in addition to teaching as an adjunct professor at the Charleston School of Law.
